The San Jose
Jazz Society sponsored one of the 100 sharks in the downtown
for the Sharkbyte public art project. Yamaguma & Associates/
Design2Market create "Mack the Shark" for the Jazz Society,
in honor of the spirit of music and jazz and its positive contribution
to society.
Mack
the Shark is an interactive shark for all ages to "get in the
groove" and improvise to the famous jazz tune, "Mack the
Knife" (playing instructions are part of the shark decor).
Designers
Steve Yamaguma and Janet Lane put the finishing touches on Mack
Friday, August 10 for the opening of the San Jose Jazz Festival.
Mack can be seen (and played) at 60 S. Market St., downtown San
Jose (in front of the San Jose Jazz Society office.

more info, contact Steve or Janet at info@yad2m.com.

Nifty shark sculptures draw attention of fans and
vandals
BY LEIGH WEIMERS Mercury News
August 15, 2001
As thousands of people discovered at the very cool San Jose Jazz
Festival over the weekend, the arty shark sculptures now dotting
the downtown are pretty cool, too. My favorite so far: the Jazz
Society's own "Mack the Shark" on Market Street, complete
with xylophone on top and instructions on the side that enable even
non-musical passersby to pause and play Kurt Weill. And you have
to like the self-assurance of such firms as Bergeson Eliopoulos,
Terra Law and Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel. Yeah, they're lawyers
and they sponsored sharks anyway, knowing people would joke about
it being professional courtesy.
